Parents sometimes wonder about the difference between tutoring and other intervention services offered by their charter school. It's a great question! Before anyone commits to the expense of individual tutoring, it's worth knowing if it's the best use of your educational funds and your student's time!
Intervention classes offered by schools can be a wonderful support for students. They are typically taught by experienced teachers to a group of students who are working on the same concept. (You might have 4th, 5th, or 6th graders working on fractions or multiplication, for example.) Kids get to learn together and it can be very successful and cost-effective. The pace and content, however, isn't determined by YOUR student's progress alone, and sometimes intervention classes aren't enough.
One-on-one tutoring offers instruction that is individualized for your student's needs. As a homeschool parent, you likely know the value of working at your student's level. When I work with students in my tutoring program, I assess their current knowledge and needs and we work where they need help, at the pace that fits them. If they get stuck on something, we can keep working on it until they are ready to move on. If something clicks quickly, we can move on faster! I'm also able to engage with students in a way that fits their personalities and interests, because I know that relaxed students learn more easily than tense students.
If you're skeptical about online tutoring (versus in person), I understand. Just know that it's very different than "zoom-schooling". One on one zoom tutoring sessions are effective and technology tools make collaboration and interaction easy.
